This climate+ package assumes the shipping of your favourite brands from all across Canada, 100km away, 500km away, 1000km away, 4000km away and 6000km away.
Calculation
Since Canada is about 9,000 kilometres in length, we are going to use a variety of numbers between 0-9000 kilometers to calculate domestic shipping.
Let's use the numbers, 100km, 500km, 1000km, 4000km and 6000km. We also know the average plane emits 115grams of carbon per kilometer.
In order to convert grams CO2 to metric tons we use the conversion factor 0.000001 and get 0.000115 MT of CO2 per kilometer of air travel.
115grams x 0.000001 = 0.000115 MT Carbon
In order to calculate the total amount of MT of CO2 per shipment, we will multiply the shipment distances by 0.00015 MT CO2 per kilometer of travel.
100km x 0.000115 MT CO2 = 0.0115 MT CO2
500 km x 0.000115 MT CO2 = 0.0575 MT CO2
1000km x 0.000115 MT CO2 = 0.115 MT CO2
40000 km x 0.000115 MT CO2 = 0.46 MT CO2
6000km x 0.000115 MT CO2 = 0.69 MT CO2
In addition, let’s assume in order to get from the airport to your home the package requires an additional 60 km drive from your home. In total between the 5 packages that would mean 300 km of driving emissions.
5 x 60 km= 300 km
We will assume delivery vans emit a similar amount of CO2 as the average car - so 251 grams of CO2 per kilometer. When we multiply this 251 grams CO2 by the 300km driven, we get 64,500 grams of CO2.
215 grams x 300 km = 64,500 grams of CO2
In order to convert grams CO2 to metric tons we use the conversion factor 0.000001 and get 0.0645 MT CO2.
64,500g CO2 x 0.000001 = 0.0645 MT CO2
In order to get the total from all our shipping, we will add together all the numbers which gives us 1.3985MT CO2
